Now it's time to compete for points again

The long summer break is coming to an end, and a busy season of events and competitions is about to begin. On Sunday, the 26th FAI World Championship in precision flying kicks off in Poland. Also starting this weekend, Europe’s leading model aircraft pilots in the F3A category will gather in France for the European Championships.

An F3A model airplane has a fuselage length of no more than 2 meters and a wingspan of less than 2 meters. Its weight must not exceed 5 kg. The aircraft are powered by an electric motor or an internal combustion engine (with a muffler), and participants perform their carefully choreographed aerobatic routines in front of a jury within an aerobatic zone or «box.» Representing Switzerland are Reto Schumacher, Philipp Schürmann, Alois Schürmann, Sandro Veronelli, and Rodito Nussbaumer (Junior). They are supported by team manager Matthias Bosshard and a team of volunteers.

Orienteering in the Air

Precision flying can be described as «aviation orienteering.» In Switzerland, it is organized by the PFA (Precision Flying Association Switzerland) on behalf of the Motor Flight Association (MFVS). There are regular training courses as well as club and Swiss championships. For more information: https://pfa.ch

At this 26th World Championship, the Polish home team enjoys a significant advantage. With a total of 10 pilots, they hope to dominate the team podium once again, as they have done for decades—the last time they had to cede it to the Czech Republic was in 2002. Also competing in Poland is our own Esther Rimensberger, whom we introduced to you in the 1/2026 issue of «AeroRevue.».
