Petition launched for the Kägiswil airfield

Although the Kägiswil airfield can continue to be operated by FGOW until September 2026, more is needed for a permanent solution. The AeCS has launched a petition today, September 24, 2025, which should be signed by all those interested in preserving our general aviation.

Thank you for supporting the petition and actively spreading the word. Please note that any donations made there will not go to the AeCS or Kägiswil airfield, but to the free online platform.

The Aero Club of Switzerland AeCS is pleased to note that the federal government has extended the building rights of the Obwalden Airfield Cooperative FGOW until September 2026. However, the fact that a parallel planning process for the conversion of the airfield is to be carried out without FGOW being able to participate is incomprehensible. The FGOW can use the Kägiswil airfield continue to operate until September 2026. As pleasing as this further extension of the building lease by the Federal Office of Armaments armasuisse may seem at first glance, the reasoning behind it is all the more intriguing.

In spring 2025, the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) started the planning process for the conversion of the former Kägiswil military airfield into a helicopter airfield for the Rega project. As, according to armasuisse, this planning process will take some time, FGOW's right to remain at the airfield has been extended. The federal government is therefore pursuing a parallel track behind the scenes, bypassing the legal proceedings and ongoing applications.

A SIL object sheet has been approved by the Federal Council for the Kägiswil airfield. However, FGOW's operating regulations have so far failed due to opposition from landowners and neighbors. The Federal Supreme Court is currently still examining formal questions in connection with FGOW's application and a decision by the FOCA from 2023 on how to proceed with the airfield. The AeCS is therefore surprised that the federal government has now opened parallel proceedings and is excluding FGOW from these proceedings, which raise questions in terms of the rule of law.

As already reported on September 18, the National Council and AeCS President Matthias Jauslin submitted a motion with 21 co-signatories, which calls on the Federal Council to take measures to preserve the airfield.
