GVM Sion: Awakening a passion for flying with the YES youth program
What an incredible day for the YES (Young Eagles of Switzerland) flights organized by GVM Sion on Saturday 17 May! A big thank you to all the enthusiastic youngsters and the volunteer pilots who made this day unforgettable. Between smiles, discoveries and first flights, flying has once again conquered hearts!
This Saturday, fifteen young people with a passion for flying had the opportunity to enjoy a unique experience in the Valais skies. This taster day between Sion and Martigny allowed the budding pilots to discover the world of flying alongside volunteer pilots.
Under the supervision of experienced enthusiasts, the participants boarded light aircraft for trial flights, during which they were able to enjoy a breathtaking view of the Rhone Valley. During the flight, the youngsters were introduced to the basics of flying: They learned about the on-board instruments, operated the controls, performed simple maneuvers and received an introduction to the basics of flight navigation.
The young people were encouraged to ask questions and exchange ideas, allowing them to benefit from inspiring conversations with their pilots. They told them about their careers, their flying experiences and their passion for a sport that combines discipline, precision and freedom.
The aim of this day was to convey a love of flying and perhaps even awaken some vocations. The initiative was welcomed by both the young people and their chaperones, who were delighted to see the participants' eyes light up when they had solid ground under their feet again.
At the end of the day, the volunteer pilots met for a convivial meal to share the highlights of this wonderful experience and to think together about future activities for young people and aviation. Author Paolo Prontera
