With the 53rd International Hot Air Balloon Week, Flims will once again become a gathering place for balloonists from across Europe from September 26 to October 4, 2026. This year\u2019s event takes on a special significance thanks to the AeCS anniversary: The Balloon Club <\/strong>Flims makes the event a place where the past and present of Swiss aviation visibly come together. Already a week before the start of Balloon Week, <\/strong>Martin Messner will give a lecture on \u00abThe Development of Aviation in Switzerland\u00bb on Sept. 18, 2026, at the Hotel Schweizerhof in Flims.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Martin Messner is the grandson of ballooning pioneer Emil Messner, who landed in the Bargis Valley above Flims on August 15, 1909. Messner set off in the gas balloon Helvetia on a 15-hour night flight that took him from Zurich across the T\u00f6sstal, over S\u00e4ntis, Altmann, the Churfirsten, and the Ringelspitz, all the way to Flims. Along with Emil Messner, L\u00e9on Givaudan, Dr. Max Schneeli, Albert Sulzer, and P. Gampert were on board\u2014an experienced team that played a decisive role in shaping Swiss aviation. Messner was a founding member of the Aero-Club of Switzerland and Swissair; he later served on the board of directors of the F\u00e9d\u00e9ration A\u00e9ronautique Internationale (FAI) and held balloonist license No. 7. Givaudan held license No. 27; Schneeli\u2014who held balloonist license No. 25\u2014was a founding member and the first president of the Eastern Swiss Airship Association (OVL), while Sulzer, as a member of the OVL, also belonged to that generation of balloonists. The original entries documenting this flight are still preserved today in the guestbook of the Bargis Mountain Lodge and serve as a reminder of a time when balloon flights were at once scientific expeditions, athletic challenges, and technical adventures. In 1908, Messner was among the great heroes of international ballooning. Together with Theodor Schaeck, he won the Gordon Bennett Race in Berlin\u2014a legendary feat that took them over 73 hours and more than 1,100 kilometers all the way to Norway. This triumph led Switzerland to host the 1909 race, which was held at the Schlieren gasworks near Zurich.<\/p>\n

Starting September 26, Flims Balloon Week will offer a program that will delight families, sports enthusiasts, and aviation fans alike. Eighteen crews from Switzerland, Germany, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands will send their colorful hot-air balloons soaring into the sky, transforming Flims into a lively aviation festival. Morning and evening launches create breathtaking moments over the Grisons mountains, while the atmospheric Night Glow\u2014featuring music and the 125th-anniversary balloon\u2014is one of the event\u2019s most emotional highlights. For children, Wednesday afternoon becomes a special experience, with games, fun, and tethered balloon rides sure to make their eyes light up. The program is rounded out by the popular Oktoberfest with live music, a diverse food and drink area offering culinary delights, and the appearance of a specially shaped balloon, which serves as a visual highlight and draws extra attention. The unique location of the Balloon Meadow allows for impressive flights and offers visitors an experience they\u2019ll remember for a long time to come.<\/p>\n
