Once the process is complete, it still expects about half of the originally anticipated maximum of 220 layoffs. Skyguide will carry out the planned job cuts, but will do so largely through socially responsible measures such as early retirement. A fair social plan is intended to mitigate the impact on the affected employees.

Skyguide’s Board of Directors has approved the strategic guidelines for the future organization as well as the implementation steps for the restructuring program. This marks the program’s gradual transition from the planning phase to implementation. The goal remains to create a more focused, leaner, and cost-efficient organization that can fulfill its statutory mandate in a stable manner over the long term.

The extensive feedback received from employees and social partners during the consultation process has influenced the design of the restructuring measures. Skyguide is therefore confident that it will be able to reduce the number of layoffs—originally expected to be a maximum of 220—by about half. Voluntary departures and early retirements could further reduce this number. The structural reduction of approximately 200 positions remains unchanged, as does the planned efficiency gain of approximately 51 million Swiss francs. These measures remain essential to putting Skyguide on a sound financial footing. Skyguide is committed to providing high-quality services to its partners, customers, and their passengers.

«We are aware that the past few weeks have caused a great deal of uncertainty and stress for many of our employees. While the expected reduction in the number of layoffs is welcome news, it should not obscure the fact that we intend to mitigate the uncertainty among our employees and the impact on those affected through effective measures. A fair social plan is in place for this purpose,» says Skyguide CEO Peter Merz.

Skyguide is realigning its strategy for the long term

In parallel with the implementation of the restructuring program, the Board of Directors has adopted a new vision and strategic guidelines for the company. These consistently align Skyguide with its statutory mandate as an air traffic control organization. This includes the question of whether Skyguide intends to replace its current in-house development of systems for air traffic control and surveillance with standardized market solutions in the future. The Board of Directors has tasked the Executive Board with conducting a comprehensive review of various options for such a strategy. This will be implemented as part of a standalone project by a dedicated task force.

New Organizational Structure and Safety Oversight

A new organizational structure under the Executive Board is intended to clarify responsibilities and streamline decision-making processes. As part of its restructuring efforts, Skyguide aims to make collaboration more efficient. Before implementing any measures, the company always assesses their impact on operational safety. Operational safety is the top priority and remains non-negotiable even as part of the transformation. Skyguide welcomes the fact that the Federal Office of Civil Aviation is closely monitoring the process from this perspective. pd

Skyguide received numerous comments from its employees and social partners during the consultation process.
